Solar Cowboys Give Industry a Bad Name
Media reports about dodgy solar panel installations have raised
concerns amongst reputable companies that the controversy will give the
industry a bad name.
When installed correctly solar
panels are an excellent investment with all the rebates and
feed-in-tariffs now available.
“We hope people considering
investing in a solar electricity system will not be scared off the idea,
but instead ask more questions to ensure they order from a reputable
company” said Adam Tesoriero, Director of SolarSwitch.
When buying a solar electricity
system there are a number of things customers need to look out for.
- Make sure the panels are a
well-known brand and are sourced from a reputable company and the
warranty lies in Australia so if you do have a problem with a panel you
do not need to deal with a company located in another country.
- Check that the system will be
installed by a Clean Energy Council accredited electrician and make sure
that qualified person will be on site for the entire installation, not
just signing the job off at the end of the day.
- Beware of companies who do not
specify which panels they will use on your order form and who cannot
give you at least a rough idea of installation date....it may never
happen and you may lose your deposit.
- This is not the time to go for
the cheapest quote. If something seems cheap there are usually a myriad
of reasons why, although they may not always be apparent. Remember
that this is a lifetime investment in your home or business.
- Chose a company that offers a
complete service i.e. Organises the rebate paperwork, offers the rebate
as a point of sale discount, organises connection to the grid,
installation of the new meter etc.
- Chose a company that has plenty
of experience and can show references if requested.
- Make sure the system has been
designed for future expansion in mind.
- Will the system be installed to
ensure air can flow under the panels so they work efficiently and do not
get too hot.
